The Bugatti Chiron is a $2.5 million dollar, 261mph hypercar, all of this speed not enough for you? Bugatti can help you if you’re clearly insane, if you pay a little extra they will unlock the Chiron to run up to an amazing 285mph.
According to Dr. Willi Netuschil has told Autoblog, 285mph is not even the max of what the Chiron could potentially be capable of:
“While other hypercar speed demons like the Ferrari LaFerrari, Porsche 918 Spyder, and McLaren P1 employ some form of hybrid electrification, Bugatti has forgone that route again in favor of sheer old-school grunt. Topping out at 261 mph with the use of a second “speed key,” it can actually go up to about 285 mph if you want Bugatti to electronically unlock the Chiron’s full insanity. However, there are only a few places on Earth where that can be done.
“You have to remember how much greater the braking distance needed is at those levels. The Volkswagen Group’s track near Wolfsburg has a specially designed long straight that can be used for these type of high-speed stunts,” says Dr. Netuschil. “There’s also a military base in Germany we can get access to that has a long enough runway.”
Dr Netuschil is referring to the VW group test track Ehra-Lessien, which has a rather long straight which is approximately 8.7 km (5.4 mi) long. Although this portion of the track is flat and level, an interesting fact about this straight is that when standing at one end of it, the other end cannot be seen due to the curvature of the Earth.
Some more mind blowing stats from Auoblog’s interview are:
- If you put all the single fibers from the Chiron’s carbon end-to-end, it would stretch from the Earth to the moon… nine times!
- A Bugatti Chiron/Veyron owner has an average of 42 cars in their garage
- And 1.7 jets and 1.4 yachts each
Whilst I am unsure exactly how you own 1.7 jets, the Chiron is clearly going to be the fastest thing with number plates ever to grace the Earth for some time.
