Are you confused by the current Mercedes AMG SUV line-up? well, now things just got slightly more confusing with the addition of the GLC 63 and GLC 63 Coupe to the already packed line-up.

An uber-fast SUV is like saying how aerodynamic can I make my house – in the real world of fast cars with the current obsession over downforce and aero trickery you have to ask why bother producing such cars. As we all know, tall things are not very sporty and generally cut through the air like a man riding a camel.

More AMG Confusion But Massive Power

Mercedes has decided to ignore this point and has bestowed both variations of the GLC 63 with the full force of their magnificent 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 – the first time this engine has been placed in an SUV. Mercedes have further added confusion to the AMG lineup by allowing you the choice of a GLC 63 in either ‘S’ form or just as a boggo ’63’, the boggo spec gives you 469bhp/479lb combined with a mechanical limited-slip differential in the rear axle; the mere addition of the ‘S’ badge means 503bhp/516lb and an electronically-controlled differential hidden away in the rear axle.

Both models receive the excellent ‘4Matic’ all-wheel drive system, this pushes the power to the rear wheels for a majority of driving and utilizes the front wheels when things get out of shape allowing you to stay straight and true. As with other current models, you get the nine-speed ‘MCT’ automatic gearbox to help deliver all that power to the wheels.

Speed, Lots Of Speed

All this massive power and witchcraft will propel the base model from 0-62mph in a rapid 4.0 seconds, the ‘S’ model completes the run in a supercar matching 3.8 seconds. When you consider the weight and bulk of both cars these numbers are astonishing, to say the least.

If you’re in the market for something very tall but very fast, both variants of the GLC 63 will debut at the New York Auto Show next week.
