Good news!! Volkswagen has finally confirmed that a GTI version of its Up city car is on the way. Considering the German car maker has kept us all waiting for five years for this news, it appears to have been worth the wait.

The Up GTI gets all of the hallmarks of a fast Volkswagen, the trademark tartan seats are there along with the red striping on the front and a number of GTI badges showing the tiny cars sporting intent.

While this model is officially branded as a concept, the production model has been confirmed. The GTI is powered by the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo engine with 113bhp and 147lb ft of torque. All of this power propels the Up GTI to 62mph from standstill in 8.8 seconds, top speed is a brisk 122mph.

When you consider the Up only weighs 997kg, these numbers are pretty quick for what is essentially a tiny city car. Further enhancements include chassis tweaks including a 15mm suspension drop all round to make the handling tighter all round.

With the likes of Kia announcing a 99bhp version of their new Picanto and Renault already bringing us the Twingo RS, now is a great time to be in the market for a warm super-mini.

So, are you excited to see a GTI in miniature form?
